Our 2025-2026 School Council
Tracy Toner, Chair
Cristal Martyniuk, Vice Chair
Randi Long, Secretary
Tyler Tkachyk, Member at large
Jennifer Squires, Member at large

This year, school council meetings are Wednesdays at 6 pm. The following dates are scheduled: Oct. 22, Nov. 19, Jan. 21, Feb. 25, Apr. 22 and May 27. We encourage all parents/guardians/caregivers to come out to our meetings. We particularly want to invite parents representing the increasing diversity in our community to come out in order for us to have all voices heard.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation--September 30
Again this year, we honour those lives lost and those families impacted by residential schools. Our students have been learning about the history and how the residential school system destroyed and continues to destroy Indigenous lives and families. We ask that if you are able, please send your child to school in an orange shirt. Your child should be able to tell you why the orange shirt is worn on this day. The National Flag of Canada on our flagpole will fly at half mast on the 30th in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. You will have noticed that we have the Every Child Matters flag on display in our main lobby throughout the year.

Hawk Spirit Wear on sale until MIDNIGHT TONIGHT (SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 28)

Our Rocky Mountain Apple and Candy Sale is now on. It is open on SchoolCash online.

Walk to School Day--Wednesday, October 1
We recognize that many of our students ride buses to school. For families who live within walking distance, we encourage you to make plans to walk your children to and from school on October 1. There will be some special events happening that day.

Elmvale On the Move Family Survey
Our school is taking part in On the Move, an active school travel initiative in Simcoe Muskoka, that aims to increase physical activity and improve school journeys for our students. Students, their families and the school will work with municipal, community, school board and public health staff to look at how we can encourage more students to walk and wheel to and from school while reducing congestion and addressing traffic safety issues.
Whether students are walking or wheeling to/from school or to the bus stop, these active trips make a difference. On the Move encourages families to think about how small changes in their school journey can support healthier habits and safer school zones.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be collecting information to better understand current travel trends, barriers, and opportunities in our school community. This information is being collected by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, and our school to help guide the development of a school On the Move Action Plan.
On or after October 6, we are asking parents/caregivers to complete a short 5-minute Family Survey at home with their eldest child who attends this school. Participation in the survey is optional and no identifiable information will be collected. The information collected will support efforts by your school and our community partners to promote safe, active school travel.
Please complete the Family Survey by October 19, 2025:

Elmvale Fall Fair Parade is October 10
We are so excited that we will all be walking in the parade to the annual Elmvale Fall Fair. Information and permission homes will be coming home this week. Please help us by returning them the day after you receive them.

Winter Clothing Drive--from Now until October 23, 2025
This is the 4th year that HCES has taken on this important task. Thanks to those who have already donated and to the adults and students of the school who are organizing this. This year we are asking for gently used clothing donations of ALL types of winter clothing. This includes but is not limited to donations of coats, snow pants, boots, hats, mitts, sweaters, warm pants, long sleeve shirts, shoes, etc. Donations are needed for everyone in the family from infants to adults.
If you need winter clothing for your kids or other family members, please check out Sharewear’s Winter Wear Giveaway. Everyone is invited to this year’s Winter Wear Giveaway. It will be held on November 1st at Elmvale Community Church 12 Queen St. (right across from Sharewear).

Racism, Bias and Hate
Please remind your children that any language or actions that are based in racism, bias or hate are not tolerated in SCDSB schools and will result in progressive discipline that can include suspension or expulsion. This includes behaviour that takes place on social media or other electronic means that negatively impacts the school community. Grounds protected under the Human Rights Code include age, ancestry, citizenship, colour, creed (religion), disability, family status, gender identity/expression, place of origin, race, sex, sexual orientation, ethnic origin or marital status. Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in students who are behaving in a manner that violates the expectations. We expect better of all students of Huronia Centennial. If you have questions or concerns please reach out to us in the office.
Mindful Mornings
All students are welcome to attend Mindful Mornings brought to our amazing parent/guardian/community and staff volunteers. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8:45 students can join us in the front hall and gym for healthy food items and time to relax before beginning a busy day of learning. Special waffle mornings happen sporadically throughout the year as a special treat. We thank our volunteers and donors. If you are interested in donating to support this program or would like to volunteer, please contact the school office.

Nuts, Peanuts and Sesame
Please do not send food items with nuts, peanuts or sesame to school. We have children with food allergies who could have a very serious allergic reaction. Please remember that products like Nutella contain nuts. Do not send these products to school. Anyone wishing to send something to school to celebrate an event should remember that items must be store-purchased and nut-safe. Please ensure that the items do not contain sesame. We are not able to accept and distribute homemade food items. Please talk to your child’s teacher before sending in food for the class.

Parking reminders
A few parents continue to park in the no stopping zone on the east side of Simcoe Street south of the crosswalk. These signs were recently installed and will be enforced. A "no stopping" sign means you cannot stop your vehicle in the designated area, even to drop off passengers. There have been additional no stopping and no parking signs installed. Parking in these locations is also impeding our buses who are exiting the school in the morning. Please ensure that you are following the directions and keep an eye out for our students.
